Summary
A major revision of this well-respected book, this new clinical guide has been completely rewritten to reflect important changes that have occurred since the publication of the second edition.
Information on specific drugs recommended for use in the treatment has been increased to include details of dosage and frequency and three new chapters have been added, covering oral medicine at extremes of age, adverse drug reactions and the orofacial tissues and prescribing.
The remaining chapters have been completely revised and updated in line with developments in our knowledge of emerging conditions, diseases and symptoms and well as new drugs and their regimens. Copiously illustrated with full colour photographs and written in a reader-friendly style, the book guides a path through the everyday problems encountered in general practice as well as the less frequently seen and more serious lesions.
Overall, this book gives clinical dentists a practical, logical and convenient guide of great value, helping to update knowledge and provide improved patient care. An essential modern text for dental practitioners, undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Reviews of previous editions
This book Compliments ‘A Clinical Guide to Periodontology (Palmer & Floyd 1997) and has been updated since the 1st edition.
Each chapter begins with a brief outline of what is to be covered and throughout salient points are high-lighted by coloured boxes. These allow the reader to seek out the important key points easily but each chapter allows for a greater understanding of the subject matter with ‘classical’ pictures accompanying the text.
Dental Health Volume 38 No 1 1999
For all general dental practitioners and undergraduate and postgraduate students this book is a useful and eminently readable summary of current thinking in oral medicine. It is certainly an excellent starting point for those developing an interest in this particular speciality.
Journal of the Irish Dental Association – CE McCreary
The title of this very readable book accurately reflects the content. It is the recommended accompaniment to mu courses in oral medicine and I have no hesitation in also recommending it as a very worthwhile addition to every practice.
The value of the book lies in the level of coverage aimed at oral medicine as seen in general dental practice. The text length is concise, almost all conditions are accompanied by clear colour clinical photographs and there is ample advice on diagnosis and management. There are numerous tables that stress the important clinical and diagnostic features and the photographs are often useful in actual discussions with patients.
In summary, A Clinical Guide to Oral medicine is a worthwhile acquisition and is an appropriate reference text at whatever level oral medicine forms in your dental practice.
