What are BDA honours and awards?
The honours system is a way to recognise outstanding merit and service given to the dental profession, public and to the association. Dentists or non-dentists may be nominated for an honour or award.
Number and type of honours
The BDA currently has six honours and four awards, with the highest office that of the President. Each award aims to honour service provided from different disciplines and from both members, and non-members, throughout their career. For a full list of honours and awards and criteria for each please see below.
Who can be nominated
Honours are aimed to recognise outstanding contributions from individuals of all ages, backgrounds and at any stage of their careers. Nominations are therefore sought from any individual that has demonstrated outstanding service to the association and UK dentistry. In addition, the Honours and Awards Committee will look particularly favourably on nominees who have made a difference to their community or profession and displayed moral courage and vision in making tough choices and hard applications.
Process of nomination
The completion of the nomination form ensures that all nominations are considered on an equal basis, and that there is no disparity of content between nominations. Please see below for further information on how to nominate and for a copy of the initial nomination form.
UK national honours
All nominations that reach the second stage of consideration by the Honours and Awards Committee will also be considered as a potential nomination for a queen’s honour. This is another reason why it is important to include as much information as possible on ways in which the individual has provided outstanding service to the community.
