What is the BDA? With over 20,000 members, the British Dental Association is the largest professional association for dentists in the UK. The BDA represents dentists in all fields, from the high street to hospitals, from research to community clinics, and from armed forces to universities.
What we do The BDA aims to get the best for its members, both in terms of practical help through services and products and by ensuring it is a national player in the development of healthcare policy. It provides its members with legal, health and safety and educational advice as well as influencing government policy in each of the UK's four nations.
History of the BDA While dentistry can be traced back to 5000BC, the history of the BDA is slightly more modest. Founded in 1880, the British Dental Association was initially set up to monitor the new Dentists Act of 1879, primarily to ensure that the interests of qualified dentists were taken care of. Once the anomalies of this act were taken care of in the 1920s, and practising dentistry while unregistered or unqualified was outlawed, the BDA was able to settle into the role that it still has today - that of promoting the interests of its members, advancing the science, arts and ethics of dentistry and improving the nation's health.
Where we are The BDA has offices in central London, Stirling, Cardiff and Belfast.
