About the NEBDN certificate in OHE
The Certificate in Oral Health Education is awarded by the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN). In order to gain this qualification, you will need to complete some practical work and pass a set of examinations.
NEBDN Record of Experience
The practical work for the qualification is recorded in a pack produced by the NEBDN called the Record of Experience. You are required to provide oral health advice to 10 people, seeing each person on two separate occasions.
Your patients must come from at least 6 of the following groups:
- Pregnant or nursing mothers
- Parents of pre-school children
- Parents of school children
- Adolescents
- Adults
- Elderly people
- People with special needs
- Health education professionals
- Medically compromised groups
- Ethnic minorities
You will be asked to write two detailed case studies: one each for two of your 10 patients. You must write your case studies on one adult and one child or adolescent.
The final part of your practical work requires you to plan, produce and evaluate an exhibition or display for your workplace.
The deadline for completing the practical work is 10 weeks before the examination date, so we strongly recommend that you discuss the patient appointments with your dentist as soon as you enrol on our course.
NEBDN Examination
Once you have completed your Record of Experience, you will be prompted to register for the examination for a fee of £160. Exams are held at various centres across the UK on the third Saturday of March and September. They consist of 3 parts:
Part A – multiple choice and short answer questions- Part B – structured short answer questions
- Oral – a 15 minute oral examination, during which you will be asked to give a 5 minute presentation on one of your case studies.
We will give you the opportunity to practise answering a range of exam questions during the course. Furthermore we will provide plenty of guidance and support in preparing for all aspects of the examination.
Key dates for 2010/2011
Your final exam date will largely depend on when you can complete the practical work. Your Record of Experience is valid for 3 consecutive exams, so you have up to 18 months to take all the necessary radiographs.
