About the course
We’re now taking 2010 applications for our new course in Oral Health Education.
Developed in partnership with OHE Southwest, this flexible, online course will help you learn the communication skills needed to educate your patients about their oral health.
To take part, you will need
- a computer with a broadband internet connection and sound (either using headphones or speakers)
- an email account which you can easily check on a regular basis, (e.g. Googlemail or Yahoo Mail)
- the signed support of a dentist who is willing to supervise your practical work.
The online part of the course consists of 27 modules which cover everything you’ll need to know about the subject. Each bitesize module can be viewed as many times as necessary over the duration of the course.
How the course works
The course is effectively split into 3 sections. The first section is online and lasts for 8 weeks. Section 2 is the practical work, known as the Record of Experience and begins after the initial 8 weeks (for information about the practical work and the qualification visit ‘NEBDN certificate in OHE’). The time taken to complete section 2 varies for each student but a minimum of 3 months is required. The final section, is the revision section, once a student has completed their practical work and applied for the final exam, we provide them with access to the online modules and a mock exam in the lead up to the exam.
Entry requirement
The course is open to all GDC-registered dental nurses.
Learning materials and support
We will provide you with all the course materials you will need, namely:
- an 8 week online course, plus a further 4 week revision course to help you prepare for the NEBDN exam
- the approved textbook: ‘Basic Guide to Oral Health Education’ by Ann Felton and Alison Chapman
- the book ‘Notes on Oral Health’ edited by Anthony S Blinkhorn
- a set of revision notes for offline study
- self-assessment questions and mock examinations to help you practice for the real thing.
- OHE Resource page, a website providing information and resources to help complete your practical work.
Even though the course is online, you won’t be studying alone. Our dedicated teaching staff will email you every week with advice and are available to answer your questions from the day you enrol until the day of your exam.
Qualification
To gain the NEBDN certificate in OHE, students will need to complete some practical work (the Record of Experience). For important information about the practical work and the qualification visit ‘NEBDN certificate in OHE’.
