About the NEBDN Certificate in Dental Radiography

The Certificate in Dental Radiography is awarded by the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN). Assessment is in two parts:

  • A portfolio to record your clinical skill in taking radiographs - the Record of Experience.
  • A 1 hour multiple-choice examination on the theoretical aspects of dental radiography.

NEBDN Record of Experience

The practical work for the qualification is recorded in a pack produced and distributed by the NEBDN, called the Record of Experience (RoE).  The RoE consists of 3 parts:

Part A - logsheets

  • 20 periapicals (using the paralleling technique)
  • 10 pairs of bitewings
  • 10 panoramic radiographs
  • 2 bisected angle technique periapicals
  • 2 occlusals
  • 2 cephalometric lateral skull views
  • 4 other radiographs of any type to bring the total to 50.

Part B – Expanded case studies

You are also required to write 3 case studies, based on radiographs from Part A

  • 1 dental panoramic radiograph
  • 1 bitewing radiograph
  • 1 paralleling technique periapical radiograph
A guide to writing your case studies is included in the RoE and we will give you more help once the course begins.

Part C – Appendix (Oblique Lateral Radiographs)

This section is very straightforward. You simply have to answer 4 questions about oblique lateral radiographs and have your main supervising dentist sign your work. Our course will provide you with all the information you need to answer the questions.

NEBDN Examination

Once you have completed your Record of Experience, you will be prompted to register for an examination for a fee of £160. Exams are held at various centres across the UK on the first Saturdays in June and December. They last for 1hr and consist of 35 multiple-choice questions.  We will give you plenty of practice in answering exam questions during the course and you will also have the chance to sit mock exams online.

Key dates for 2010/2011

Your final exam date will largely depend on when you can complete the practical work. Your Record of Experience is valid for 3 consecutive exams, so you have up to 18 months to take all the necessary radiographs.

Monday 12th April 2010 – deadline for handing in practical work
Saturday 5th June 2010 – exam day
