Each year the British Dental Association hosts an annual Honours and Awards Dinner where awards are given in recognition of outstanding and distinguished service to the association and to the dental profession. The Good Practice Scheme Practice of the Year is awarded to celebrate a practice that champions the Scheme and recognises the efforts of a whole dental team.

Winners - Peterborough Dental Access Centre

Peterborough Dental Access Centre was formed in April 2000 as a one chair facility to treat patients in pain.  Since then the centre has developed into a 5 surgery dynamic facility with a 20 strong team of dentists specialising in gerodontology, periodontology and special needs dentistry. The centre is deeply committed to post graduate education& training with 2 vocational trainers on site and dental nurses with radiography and oral health education certificates. The team is also ably supported by a practice manager and an administration assistant.

The centre is open 7 days a week and the team is highly reflective about how time and resources are best used, continuously striving to find innovative solutions to improve access and meet the needs of their local community.

In addition to urgent care the team are also provide a domiciliary service for all housebound patients and a full range of NHS dental treatment including general anaesthesia for patients with special needs. Peterborough Dental Access Centre is also a referral centre for local dentists for the provision of both minor oral surgery and general anaesthetic extractions for children. 

Peterborough Dental Access Centre works closely with the Public Health team on epidemiological field work for use by health authorities in planning local dental services and are currently undertaking a special needs school screening pilot to enable these children to access routine dental care. 

The judging panel described this year’s winners as: “A modest team that shows real commitment to providing a creative & dynamic service to high needs patients”.

A Commendation were also made by the judges -

COMMENDATION FOR DEMONSTRATING OUTSTANDING COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING DENTAL SERVICES FOR THE COMMUNITY was awarded to Newland Dental Care Clinic, Hull.

To be eligible for the award your practice must be a current member of the BDA Good Practice Scheme. Short-listed practices receive a framed certificate and the winning practice is invited to attend the BDA Honours and Awards Dinner to receive their award.
