BDA launches Local Commissioning Working Group report
On 13 October the BDA’s Local Commissioning report was launched by Professor Chris Drinkwater, Chair of the Local Commissioning Working Group. The audience comprised primary care organisation commissioners, dental and national press, general dental practitioners and the Department of Health.
The report is a ‘how-to’ guide to commissioning high quality dental services based on the commissioning cycle. It maps directly to NHS England’s World Class Commissioning competencies and shows how each of the 11 competencies for dentistry can be met.
Three seminars were held in the afternoon, all featuring key elements from the report and the World Class Commissioning competencies. Dr Ray Lowry, senior lecturer at Newcastle University, gave an interactive presentation on the benefits of using social marketing to introduce changes in the behaviour of individuals to improve their health. Director of Primary Care for the Picker Institute, Paul Gardner, spoke about how to improve patient and public involvement in dentistry, followed by a session on clinical leadership by Chair of the General Dental Practice Committee, John Milne, who closed the afternoon. Professor Jimmy Steele joined the session by video link to talk about clinical leadership and his vision for driving forward excellence in dentistry.
The report and further information is available here, including the results of the BDA research into PCT performance.
