The governance of the BDA follows democratic principles, and is in compliance with both company and trade union law. The policy and strategic direction of the Association is set by the Principal Executive Committee (PEC), elected by BDA members.   The PEC is advised by  country and craft committees representing constituent parts of the profession, also elected by members.  
 
The country councils come together in a UK Council, which has an important role in reviewing the performance of senior elected officers and staff through its scrutiny committee.
