Ethics in dentistry
This session is designed to promote discussion on ethical values and drivers of the dental team. The importance of how the public perceives dentists and how trust is vital to the dental profession is discussed and reference to GDC guidance on ethical decision making is made.
- To improve knowledge of legislation.
- To emphasise the ethical nature of being a professional.
- To demonstrate the importance of ethical behaviour in maintaining confidence and trust in the dental profession.
- To be aware of GDC guidelines on ethical behaviour.

About the speaker
Richard Birkin, Head of Regional Services, British Dental Association
Originally a GDP in the North West, before joining the BDA Dick was a manager with the Dental Reference Service for 24 years. He also spent time as a Clinical Policy Adviser for the DRS where he worked closely with SHAs and PCTs in analysing data and managing risk. He has given evidence at over a hundred disciplinary hearings and has acted as an expert witness at the GDC.
