Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 (IRMER) impose significant requirements for patient protection, and as a result continuing education is essential for every IRMER practitioner and operator. This one-day course covers the principles of justification, optimisation and limitation and satisfies both the IRMER regulations and core continuing professional development requirements as recommended by the GDC.

- know the risk of ionising radiation and the principles of radiation protection in dental radiology
- know the radiation doses in dental radiology and the factors affecting radiation dose
- understand the principles of a quality assurance programme
- understand the use of selection criteria in relation to dental radiography
- know the changes to legislation concerning dental radiology and be aware of their statutory responsibilities
- understand the various imaging modalities available, including 2D and 3D (CBCT) digital imaging, and their advantages and disadvantages in dentistry and the various factors that affect diagnostic yield.

Dental practitioners and IRMER operators - hygienists, therapists and dental nurses who have already obtained their dental radiography certificate.

About the speakers
 | Jane Luker, Deputy Medical Director and Consultant in Dental & Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospitals, Bristol NHS Foundation Trust Jane Luker qualified in Dentistry from King’s College, University of London and obtained a Fellowship in Dental Surgery (RCS Edinburgh). Following completion of the PhD she developed the dental service for medically compromised patients within the trust prior to commencing specialist training in Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology accrediting in 1999. Dr Luker is on GDC Specialist list for Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology and Oral Medicine. Dr Luker was appointed Consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology at the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust in 2000 and the element lead for undergraduate teaching in Dental radiology. From 2002-2009 Dr Luker was Clinical Director /Lead Doctor for Dental Services. Dr Luker was appointed Deputy Medical Director in September 2008. She remains active in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, is president elect of the British Society of Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology, specialty advisor to the Royal College of Surgeons and Royal College of Surgeons (England), Speciality Advisor for dental & maxillofacial radiology and an examiner in the Diploma of Dental Radiology, Royal College of Radiologists. |

 | Rebecca Davies,Consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiography, Bristol DentalHospital Rebecca Davies main clinical interests lie in interventional head and neck ultrasound and Cone Beam CT. As well as lecturing on the IRMER ionising radiation courses in the South West over the last seven years, Rebecca also lectures in radiographic interpretation and Cone beam CT. She is also involved in the Dental Nurse Radiography course in Bristol which continues to be a very popular course. |

Cancellation policy
All cancellations must be received in writing either by fax to 020 7563 4591, or by email to events@bda.org, or by post to The Events team, BDA, 64 Wimpole Street, London W1G 8YS. This must then be followed by a telephone call to confirm receipt. Cancellations received 29 days or more prior to the event will be entitled to a 100% credit voucher or refund. Cancellations received between 15 days and 28 days (inclusive) prior to the event will receive a 100% credit voucher to attend a future BDA event or a 75% refund. For late cancellations received between 1 day and 14 days (inclusive) prior to the event, no credit voucher or refund will be given. Failure to attend the event on the day will constitute late cancellation and no credit voucher or refund will be given. Substitutions are welcome at any time.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the programme may change and the BDA reserves the right to cancel the event or alter the venue and/or speakers.
