Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 (IRMER) impose significant requirements for patient protection, and as a result continuing education is essential for every IRMER practitioner and operator. This one-day course covers the principles of justification, optimisation and limitation and satisfies both the IRMER regulations and core continuing professional development requirements as recommended by the GDC.

- know the risk of ionising radiation and the principles of radiation protection in dental radiology
- know the radiation doses in dental radiology and the factors affecting radiation dose
- understand the principles of a quality assurance programme
- understand the use of selection criteria in relation to dental radiography
- know the changes to legislation concerning dental radiology and be aware of their statutory responsibilities
- understand the various imaging modalities available, including 2D and 3D (CBCT) digital imaging, and their advantages and disadvantages in dentistry and the various factors that affect diagnostic yield.

Dental practitioners and IRMER operators - hygienists, therapists and dental nurses who have already obtained their dental radiography certificate.

About the speaker

Eric is currently Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant and Head of the Department of Dental Radiological Imaging at King’s College London Dental Institute where he has been based for the last 30 years. He is former President of the British Society of Dental and MaxilloFacial Radiology (BSDMFR) and the European Academy of Dental and MaxilloFacial Radiology (EADMFR). Eric lecturers nationally and internationally and is author of several publications including the textbooks Essentials of Dental Radiography and Radiology – now its 4th edition – and Radiography and Radiology for Dental Care Professionals. |

Cancellation policy
All cancellations must be received in writing either by fax to 020 7563 4591, or by email to events@bda.org, or by post to The Events team, BDA, 64 Wimpole Street, London W1G 8YS. This must then be followed by a telephone call to confirm receipt. Cancellations received 29 days or more prior to the event will be entitled to a 100% credit voucher or refund. Cancellations received between 15 days and 28 days (inclusive) prior to the event will receive a 100% credit voucher to attend a future BDA event or a 75% refund. For late cancellations received between 1 day and 14 days (inclusive) prior to the event, no credit voucher or refund will be given. Failure to attend the event on the day will constitute late cancellation and no credit voucher or refund will be given. Substitutions are welcome at any time.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the programme may change and the BDA reserves the right to cancel the event or alter the venue and/or speakers.
