The Long Arm of the Law with Kevin Lewis
We live in an increasingly complicated world, in which public expectations and demands for accountability are greater than ever before. But healthcare has come under particular scrutiny in recent years and the medico-legal risks of our professional working environment are very much greater than in years gone by. This presentation will take a sideways look at the world in which we live and practise, with a particular emphasis upon professionalism and ethics, and will examine the interface between dentistry, ethics, professionalism and the law in the context of dentistry as it is practised today, and in the light of likely future developments.

1. To explain the relationship between ethics, professionalism and the law
2. To examine several specific ethical principles in healthcare and their relevance and application to dentistry
3. To provide an international overview of current trends in the approach to consent and common pitfalls in the consent process
4. To explain the changing dento-legal and professional risks of providing dental care here in the UK
