BDA Seminar series:
Managing failures and avoiding over-treatment in restorative dentistry

Friday 6 November 2009
Hilton Manchester Deansgate, Manchester

Introduction

This seminar will be of benefit to all dentist, whether you are just starting out or have been in practice for 20 years.

Throughout your career you will see some of the inevitable failures trickle back into the practice. If you are sensible, reflective and honest with yourself you learn far more from your failures than you ever learn from your successes. Acceptance and analysis of the reasons for these failures are vital and hold the key to the avoidance of similar adverse outcomes in the future.

The morning session will address common problems including failure to assess the real risks in advance of treatment and failure to deal with these rigorously and intellectually and with appropriate communication before starting treatment. A common problem is to treat too early when not enough is known about the patient, their problems and their aspirations.

The afternoon session will look at advanced restorations and how it allows you to minimise intervention and improve predictability when restoring teeth. However to use these restorations to their mazimum you must re-examine some of the traditional techniques and understand the materials better than ever before, if restorations are to be successful in the long-term. Failures come in many forms - aesthetic, bonding, material, occlusal to name but a few. Whilst all-ceramic restorations offer many potential advantages, they are more technique sensitive than previous generations of materials. A thorough understanding of the material properties, preparation space and adhesive requirements for these materials is essential to avoid failures.
