Introduction
Now celebrating its tenth year, ‘Career opportunities in UK dentistry’ is a unique one-day event organised by the British Dental Association and UCL Eastman Dental Institute. Due to the event’s popularity we are moving to a new, bigger venue – the prestigious Central Hall Westminster, located opposite Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.
The conference is aimed at vocational dental practitioners, young dentists, anyone considering a change of career or returning to dentistry after a career break, as well as dentists from overseas.
Conference
The day will consist of a programme of lectures by knowledgeable speakers drawing on their own experiences to give you an invaluable insight into the career options available.
Exhibition
Employers of dentists and organisations who support dentists throughout their careers will be exhibiting throughout the day. The exhibition will be held in areas adjacent to the meeting rooms where lunch and refreshments will also be provided. This is an ideal opportunity to speak face to face with potential employers and those providing career guidance and support services.

11.30 – 12.00 Specialist care in the NHS practice
John Milne, Chairman, General Dental Practice Committee
Developing specialist skills in general dental practice can be challenging within the NHS environment. However, skills can be developed if the PCTs understand the need for these services to improve the quality of care within their population base. There are now established pathways for becoming a Dentist with Special Interests in many areas such as endodontics, minor oral surgery and orthodontics.
12.10 – 12.45 Private general practice – where is it going?
Amarjit Gill, Private Practitioner, Nottingham
Amarjit Gill will review how dentistry is delivered on a private basis. He will show how private dentistry permits more time and choice for dentists and their team, enabling you to invest in newer techniques and training. He will also look at trends in dentistry and end with predictions for the future, to enable colleagues to plan their future better.
12.45 – 13.50 Lunch (Lecture Hall and Library)
14.00 – 14.30 Oral and maxillofacial surgery
Nayeem Ali, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Barts and The London NHS Trust and Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust
Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is an amazing specialty encompassing the disciplines of dentistry, medicine and surgery. Dental students get varying amounts of exposure to the specialty as undergraduates so the aim of this session is to:
- Tell you more about the specialty and what we do
- Tell you why EVERYONE should, at the least, do an SHO/foundation post in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Explain how you can become an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
- Outline how your training can be funded and the time scales involved
- Outline my job as a consultant and why I love it!
14.40 – 15.10 Specialist private practice
Pranay Sharma, specialist practice limited to prosthodontics; Clinical Lecturer in Prosthodontics, UCL Eastman CPD
In 1998 the GDC set up lists of registered dentists who met certain conditions and were given the right by the GDC to use a specialist title. Lists are now in place for oral surgery, restorative dentistry, periodontics, dental public health, surgical dentistry, endodontics, prosthodontics, paediatric dentistry, orthodontics, oral medicine, oral microbiology, oral pathology, special care dentistry and dental and maxillo-facial radiology. Currently there is much debate regarding the inclusion of a specialist list for dental implantology.
This presentation will cover:
- The entry criteria to join any of the specialist lists, with particular emphasis on the monospecialities of prosthodontics, endodontics and periodontics.
- The number of years it is likely to take, the examinations to pass and the likely cost.
- From the personal experience of a specialist prosthodontist, the benefits and some of the drawbacks of this pathway will be discussed.
15.20 – 16.00 Is there life after VT?
Stephen Hancocks OBE, Editor-in-Chief, British Dental Journal and Editor, International Dental Journal
What is a successful career? How do you define success? Where is the balance between working life and real life – or are they the same thing seen from a different perspective? Stephen Hancocks rounds off the day with one of his famously wry sideways looks.
