Aims:
To introduce and develop the theoretical knowledge for the management of critically ill or deteriorating patients in general dental practice.
Objectives:
By the end of the lecture, participants should:
• Identify the signs and symptoms of the critically ill or deteriorating patient
• Understand the theory behind basic life support on a patient
• Be able to discuss the systemic diseases that may affect dental care and how these may be managed
• Understand how to administer emergency drugs
• Be familiar with the concept of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
• Appreciate the importance of roles and responsibilities within the dental team in providing effective life support for the critically ill patient
