This practical, one-day course looks at the components of being a successful people manager. The programme pinpoints a range of proven techniques, skills and attributes for motivating each member of the team to give their optimum contribution to the success of the team.

What will you learn?

By the end of the course you will:

  • nderstand the strategies and approaches for successful people management
  • have the necessary skills and techniques to be an effective team leader and understand how to implement these in different situations
  • be able to build an effective communication system within the team, both formal and informal, promoting effective team work
  • understand how to motivate a busy dental team, creating a proactive, 'can-do' attitude
  • know how to facilitate the team to build good working relationships with one another
  • be able to recognise individual personaliities and needs within the team members
  • understand team dynamics and politics and how to manage conflict within the team environment
  • know how to carry out effective appraisals for all staff members using best practice procedures
  • understand how to use appraisals to build existing strengths, set goals and recognise staff development requirements/opportunities
  • be able to develop training and coaching skills to grow your team members' potential.

Course outcomes

As a result of attending this workshop you will be able to apply effective people management skills to enthuse and motivate your team. You will be able to apply proven management techniques into team appraisals. You will see the role of job descriptions to make objective decisions for your investment in staff development and learn techniques to follow through with agreed actions. As a result of your learning you will make team appraisals an effective performance management tool by using the practical hints and tips provided.

This one-day course is aimed at both exisitng managers and those aspiring to management who would like to hone their management skills to build a successful dental team and to provide effective leadership to team members.

About the speaker

Glenys Bridges

Glenys Bridges, Managing Director, Dental Resource Company Ltd

Glenys began her career in dentistry in 1972 as a dental nurse-receptionist. Her work now includes delivering workshops, in-house and home learning version of BTEC qualifications, consultancy and recruitment, all of which brings her into contact with profesionals from all sectors of dentistry. She holds qualifications in management and teaching, is a qualified life coach, author and columist and has recently been appointed the Honorary Vice President of the British Dental Practice Managers' Association.

Cancellation policy

All cancellations must be received in writing either by fax to 020 7563 4591, or by email to events@bda.org, or by post to The Events team, BDA, 64 Wimpole Street, London W1G 8YS. This must then be followed by a telephone call to confirm receipt. Cancellations received 29 days or more prior to the event will be entitled to a 100% credit voucher or refund. Cancellations received between 15 days and 28 days (inclusive) prior to the event will receive a 100% credit voucher to attend a future BDA event or a 75% refund. For late cancellations received between 1 day and 14 days (inclusive) prior to the event, no credit voucher or refund will be given. Failure to attend the event on the day will constitute late cancellation and no credit voucher or refund will be given. Substitutions are welcome at any time.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the programme may change and the BDA reserves the right to cancel the event or alter the venue and/or speakers.
