Richard Birkin

Richard is Head of Regional Services at the BDA with a team of Regional Consultants who support members locally and liaise with local opinion-formers. Originally a GDP, Dick then worked as a manager with the Dental Reference Service (NHSBSA Dental Services) for 12 years where he managed teams of Dental Reference Officers throughout the country and more recently, worked as a Clinical Policy Adviser. He worked on design for their current working practices including the DRS record card audit and the DRO visit. He has given evidence at over a hundred disciplinary hearings including 12 at the GDC. He has acted as an expert witness and lectures widely on law and ethics, quality, monitoring, and record keeping.


Lindsay Bellringer

Lindsay qualified as a dental nurse in 2006 and went on to join the Royal Air Force in 2008. Lindsay has a wide variety of dental experience including oral surgery, paediatric dentistry, and cosmetic dentistry– volunteering for Crisis at Christmas. She runs and teaches on Smiles by James courses and is Bow Lane Dental’s Patient Care Coordinator.

Julie Burke

Julie Burke is qualified in Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) with over 12 years of on-call and in-patient management experience in Maxillofacial Surgery. Julie qualified in 1995 and obtained her Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FDS.RCS) in 1999. Julie has delivered medical emergencies courses for over 10 years, for the dental team and more recently, undergraduate and postgraduate dental students, and for qualified dentists. Julie is a lead member of the resQdentTM team and appreciates the challenges of maintaining the requisite equipment and necessary CPD in a busy multi-practitioner dental surgery.


Kate Bunyan

Kate studied medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, London, qualifying in 2002.  She has had a “portfolio” medical career, including surgical, critical care and emergency medicine training, as well as having an interest in pre-hospital medicine, which suited her to working as a doctor on-board cruise ships which she enjoyed enormously.   She is now Medical Director for Carnival UK (P&O Cruises and Cunard) where she is responsible for all aspects of medical and public health.
