This presentation will describe how speed of injection influences the success of inferior alveolar and mental and incisive nerve blocks and discuss the factors that determine the success of infiltration techniques in the mandible.

15.05 Intranasal midazolam. Does it work, is it safe, and how acceptable is it to patients?

The combined intranasal/intravenous technique is increasingly being used as an alternative to GA for adults with a severe disability. In this presentation you will see a video demonstration, hear the evidence supporting its efficacy and safety, and explore its valuable role in improving standards of dental care for this challenging group of patients.

15.20 Managing patients with cancer of the head and neck region

Mary will discuss the role of the dental team before, during and after treatment for cancer of the head and neck region. This special tip session will discuss which teeth should be extracted before radiotherapy, optimum preventive regimes for continuing care and suggestions for management in a difficult oral environment.

15.35 Using pre-visit questionnaires to improve dental visits for people with autism

A brief review of some of the difficulties experienced by people with autism when facing a dental visit,and a description of how resources were developed in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team and parents or carers, to make visits easier. The presentation focusses on the pre-visit questionnaire which helps the service to prepare for the visit, and which has proved to be so helpful that it is now used for all new referrals to the community dental service.

  • To be aware of what difficulties people with autism may have when visiting the dentist.
  • To have an insight into how a previsit questionnaire can help to improve the dental visit experience.

16.45 Orthodontics: knowing the limitations and when to refer

Applicable to GDPs, YD

This seminar aims to be informal and interactive to enable delegates to express their concerns with orthodontic provision and referral protocols since the introduction of the 2006 nGDS contract. Current orthodontic techniques and innovations will be discussed to help the general dental practitioner educate their patients on the orthodontic choices available to them. Various interceptive orthodontic methods will be clearly demonstrated to show the importance of treatment timing in getting the best result for our patients. Finally, the dilemma of which patients should be referred for specialist advice (and how to go about it) will be addressed in detail.

  • The limitations of contemporary orthodontics.
  • The types of orthodontic problems conducive to early intervention.
  • Which patients to refer, where to refer them and the best time to refer them for further advice/treatment.
