The Chief Dental Officer confirms that practices in England should achieve essential requirements by December 2010, which includes a plan of how they will work towards achieving ‘best practice’. Although practices and PCTs can agree a timescale for achieving best practice, PCTs should not impose best practice requirements unilaterally.

The GDC is consulting on new draft guidance on ethical advertising. One of the suggestions in the document is that dentists should not use the courtesy title 'Dr'. They should also not refer to themselves as, for example, 'orthodontist' unless they are on the specialist list.

The deadline for completing the annual declaration of net pensionable earnings is 31st July 2010 for GDPs in England and Wales. It is a contractual requirement for contractors to complete this declaration and is detailed in the Statement of Financial Entitlement under paragraph 4.21. You need to provide the actual net pensionable earnings for each performer between 1st April 2009 to 31st March 2010. To calculate the net pensionable earnings you need to multiply their gross NHS pay, before any deductions are made, by 43.9 per cent.
The BDA – as a member of the Smokefree Action Coalition – is urgently asking members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to contact their MPs following reports that the Coalition Government is considering repealing the regulations passed by the previous administration to prohibit tobacco displays in shops and the sale of tobacco from vending machines.

Following the Government's launch of the White Paper on health Equity and excellence: Liberating the NHS on 12 July, the BDA summarises the key points raised in relation to primary care dental services and the dates proposed for implementation.
The Information Governance (IG) Toolkit has now been released by NHS Connecting for Health. The Toolkit requires practices to register an account and work through a list of sixteen requirements using a check-box system to assess their compliance level.
Two members of the APPG for Dentistry have this week been confirmed as members of the influential Health Select Committee in Westminster. Andrew George MP (Lib Dem, St Ives) and Rosie Cooper MP (Lab, West Lancaster) – both new members to the APPG for Dentistry – will work alongside cross-party parliamentary colleagues to scrutinise the work of the Department of Health.
The Government launched its White Paper Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS today, which includes changes to how dental services will be commissioned in England.
