The Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt, Member of Parliament for South West Surrey, has been appointed Secretary of State for Health in David Cameron’s first major reshuffle since becoming Prime Minister. Mr Hunt replaces Andrew Lansley, who has been appointed Leader of the Commons.
Before entering Parliament at the 2005 General Election Mr Hunt enjoyed a career as a successful businessman and entrepreneur, having founded two companies – a marketing consultancy and the Hotcourses publishing firm. He was quickly appointed to the Conservatives’ frontbench, becoming Shadow Minister for Disabled People in December 2005. In 2007 he joined the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Culture Secretary, and was appointed Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sports following the formation of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition in May 2010.
Born and educated in Surrey, Mr Hunt attended Charterhouse School before studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Magdalen College, Oxford where he obtained a first-class honours degree and was president of the Oxford University Conservative Association.
