Modern technology and endodontic outcomes

Session synopsis

This session will start by reviewing clinical literature and identify common factors that influence the outcome of endodontic treatment. Following this, the speaker will address the factors that have been identified as having a major influence and consider how modern endodontic techniques can help prevent these problems. Particular emphasis will be placed on lighting and magnification, identifying and negotiating canals, rotary and reciprocating instrumentation, active irrigation and the importance of a sound coronal restoration.

About the speaker


Phil Lumley, Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics, Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust and Head of University of Birmingham School of Dentistry

Professor Philip Lumley is currently Head of the University of Birmingham School of Dentistry and has an Honorary Consultant position in Restorative Dentistry/Endodontics with Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust. He also runs a referral practice within Birmingham Dental Hospital and has a particular interest in the use of the operating microscope in complex endodontic cases.  Philip graduated from the University of Dundee in 1980, following house jobs in Dundee and Glasgow he moved to the University of Birmingham as a lecturer in Conservative Dentistry (1984) where he gained a Certificate of Accreditation in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons Glasgow (1989) and an MDentSc (1991) and PhD(1995)  from the University of Birmingham.  Philip was appointed to a Senior lecturer in Restorative Dentistry in 1996 and Personal Chair in Endodontology 2003, he entered the Endodontic Specialist List in 2000 and is a Past President of the British Endodontic Society.
