The aim of this presentation is to discuss the 2017 classification system focussing on periodontitis. There have been substantial changes to the classification and many of these should simplify our approach to this condition.

Learning content​A lecture based session with the opportunity to ask questions to the speaker.

  • Understand the changes to classifying periodontitis
  • Be familiar with the reasons for changing the classification
  • Understand the British Society of Periodontology’s recommendation for implementation of the system in general dental practice
  • Recognise the similarities and differences between the old and new systems for periodontal screening and diagnosis in dental practice.

Professor Ian Needleman

Ian is Professor of Periodontology and Evidence-Informed Healthcare at UCL Eastman Dental Institute and Honorary Consultant in Periodontology with UCLH. He is a clinical specialist in practice at PerioLondon. He also leads at the Centre for Oral Health and Performance which has been awarded recognition by the International Olympic Committee as a research centre in collaboration with the Institute of Sport Exercise and Health and the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine.

Ian is an Editor with Cochrane Oral Health. His research has been awarded prizes by the European Federation of Periodontology, Royal Society of Medicine, German Periodontal Society, German Cochrane Centre and International Association for Dental Research.

Ian was nominated as an inspiring teacher at UCL in 2007 and received the UCL Provost’s Award for Leadership in Public Engagement in 2017. Ian was lead author of an evidence review for the 2017 World Workshop on Classification of Periodontal and Peri-implant diseases, Chicago, USA in 2017 and President of the British Society of Periodontology in 2017.
