Session synopsis

Complaints against general dental practitioners having been increasing over a number of years. The effects of complaints can sometimes have devastating effects on the lives of practitioners. Although we cannot live and work in a completely risk-free environment this presentation highlights some simple strategies that can help avert complaints, and which can be used in everyday practice. Areas such as record-keeping and consent will be covered. The information is designed to be useful for experienced dental professionals as well as recently qualified colleagues.

About the speaker

Abhi Pal, GDP and Expert Witness, Birmingham

Abhi is a general dental practitioner and practice principal who runs a four surgery practice in Birmingham. He is the Vice Chair of the FGDP Clinical Standards Committee. He has worked as a PCT/NHS England Dental Adviser for 12 years when he gave clinical input into complaints management. He is called upon regularly by defence organisations and the GDC to provide expert opinion in clinical negligence cases. Abhi has used his experience of the complaints process to create a presentation which will assist colleagues in reducing the risk of patient complaints.
