Speakers

Peter Day
Associate Professor and Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, University of Leeds

Peter Day qualified from Bristol in 1997. He then spent two years in general practice and hospital dentistry in Newcastle and a further year in Bolton in oral and maxillofacial surgery. In 2000, he started his specialist and academic training in Leeds. In 2009 he spent a six months sabbatical working at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. In 2010, he was appointed to a joint academic appointment with University of Leeds and Bradford salaried dental services as a Lecturer and Consultant in paediatric dentistry. He leads the paediatric dentistry modules for the hygiene and therapy students, as well as contributing to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. He has co-written one chapter of a leading paediatric dentistry text book and developed a number of e-learning packages for junior dentists and doctors. He has lectured at local, national and international conferences.

Peter Day's research interests are clinically related and focus primarily in dental trauma and premolar transplantation, pulp biology and more recently lifecourse epidemiology with participation in birth cohorts in Bradford and Southampton. He has published over 30 articles in international peer reviewed journals. He was elected as a director of the International Association of Dental Traumatology and is chair of their Research Committee. He also sits on the Editorial Board of Dental Traumatology and reviews articles for a further eight international journals. He has supervised the research components of ten postgraduate clinical paediatric dentistry masters and one professional doctorate. In 2012, Peter was promoted to Associate Professor.

Deputy Director of Teaching and Learning, Professor/Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, University of Sheffield

Helen was appointed professor and honorary consultant in paediatric dentistry at Sheffield Dental School in 2006. Since then she has developed a keen interest in child-centred oral health research, and am part of a vibrant multi-disciplinary research group, called CREATE (sheffield.ac.uk/dentalschool/research/create). Through a variety of qualitative and quantitative approaches, their research has sought to engage children more meaningfully, so that we can better understand how different dental conditions, and associated treatments, may impact on them. Current projects include the development and evaluation of a guided self-help cognitive behavioural therapy intervention to reduce dental anxiety and determining clinical and psychosocial outcomes following aesthetic treatment for enamel opacities in children and young people. One of the most rewarding parts of Helen's job is to enthuse and support junior colleagues in their early research careers. Another enjoyable role was being the Scientific Chair for the 2015 IAPD Congress in Glasgow.
