Professor of Oral Biology, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry
Paul graduated in biophysics from Leeds University and then went on to do a PhD in dental biophysics from London University. He was appointed Professor of Oral Biology in 2014 at the Dental School, Queen Mary University of London. His BDS teaching is predominately on basic sciences of enamel structure, saliva biochemistry, caries mechanisms, and fluoride.
His research interests cover enamel chemistry, hydroxyapatite chemistry, chemistry of enamel demineralisation, X-ray microscopy and more recently the role of salivary proteins in de and remineralisation. He has published over 90 papers in refereed journals and recently completed a book chapter on enamel bio-demineralisation, as well as an undergraduate book chapter on the interaction of enamel and saliva.
He is currently Secretary of Association of Basic Science Teachers in Dentistry, Honorary Assistant Secretary of the British Division of Oral and Dental Research and Associate Editor of Caries Research. In 2010 he established the first UK postgraduate MSc programme in Oral Biology.
