What to expect

Join Joe Hendron, Tom Willan, Richard Moore and Kate Waldon as they share tips and tricks they have discovered throughout their careers working in in a busy practice setting, whether it is NHS or Private practice. Each speaker will focus on one specific area of expertise focusing on ways to maximise time and productivity: Restorative Treatment Staging, Endodontics, Oral Surgery and Paediatric Dentistry. There will be plenty of opportunity for attendees to ask questions or share their own 'tips and hacks'. Everyone is welcome to come along and share their invaluable experience!

Joe graduated from Leeds University in 1988 and became principal of his practice in Wakefield in 1992.  He is a well experienced practitioner in all aspects of dentistry with an interest in politics and currently holds position as the Chair of the Wakefield Local Dental Committee, Yorkshire and Humber Council of LDCs and a member of the General Dental Practice Committee. He feels it is important that all dentists, NHS and private, are represented and supported by the BDA Yorkshire Branch and local Sections throughout their careers.

Tom Willan is a dentist with practice limited to endodontics at Horbury Dental Care and has been taking referrals since 2020. After completing his diploma in restorative dentistry with the Royal College of Surgeons Tom focused on providing high quality root canal treatment and was awarded a masters degree in Endodontology in 2022

Richard graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2002 and completed an externship in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Illinois, Chicago and gained experience in Canada. Richard is a Clinical Lecturer in Oral Surgery at the University of Leeds and an Honorary Consultant Oral Surgeon at  Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and has a private referral practice based in Yorkshire.

His professional interests are wide-ranging, including being a reviewer for several academic journals, and lecturing internationally. He has a particular clinical interests in all aspects of oral surgery and dental implants. In addition to this, he has interests within managing medically compromised patients, third molars and treatment under conscious sedation. His PhD research focuses on referral behaviours of GDP’s towards patients requiring oral surgery treatment and the confidence and competence of GDPs and oral surgery.

Kate graduated with Merit from the University in Leeds in 2010. She undertook four years of DFT and DCT posts before taking permanent positions splitting time between the Community Dental Services and general practice. After leaving CDS, Kate took a role as clinical teaching fellow at the University of Leeds, still retaining general practice commitments. During these years she completed the FGDP Diploma in Restorative Dentistry. Now she works solely in general dental practice using her accreditation in Level 2 Complexity Care in Paediatric Dentistry to take patient transfers from Wakefield CDS two sessions per week.

Restorative Treatment Staging with Joe Hendron

Joe will discuss the staging of treatments based on his experience of 30 years in practice and recently providing Urgent Access sessions. This will help to maximise productivity in practice together with a focus on patient care to ensure treatment staging is effective and sustainable.

Endodontics with Tom Willan 

Tom will use his Endodontic knowledge to provide attendees with tips on how to access a tooth effectively and quickly when working in a busy practice. Tom is involved in FD training and has considerable experience helping new dentists.

Oral Surgery with Richard Moore 

Richard will provide attendees with tips on extractions and assessment of when to extract and when to refer!

Paediatric Dentistry - speaker TBC

The speaker will focus on the management of children in dental practice

If you feel at all unwell, we encourage you to take a lateral flow test the evening before you are due to arrive - should your test result be positive, we ask you not to attend.

If your test is negative, but you do have symptoms of COVID-19 (a new, persistent cough; a high temperature; or loss/changes to your sense of taste or smell) we kindly request you consider not attending the event to mitigate any risk to other attendees.
