Luke is an award-winning oral and maxillofacial surgeon with extensive experience in surgery of the head, neck and face. Having completed undergraduate degrees in both medicine and dentistry, postgraduate memberships of dental surgery and surgery in general from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Luke has wide-ranging training in medicine and surgery culminating in over 20 years experience. His higher surgical training was based in London at major teaching hospitals including Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, The Evelina Children’s Hospital, King’s College Hospital, Northwick Park Hospital, St George’s Hospital and University College London Hospital.
Luke was awarded the FRCS(OMFS) Gold Medal from the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons having been ranked top in the country when he sat the national fellowship exam of the Royal College of Surgeons to qualify as a consultant. This in-depth training in dentistry, medicine and surgery has resulted in a comprehensive understanding of how to investigate, diagnose and manage all conditions affecting the head, neck and face.
Luke is a substantive NHS consultant oral and maxillofacial/ head and neck surgeon at University College London Hospital where he is chair of the head and neck reconstruction multi-disciplinary team. He has interests in the management of cancers of the head, neck and face as well as microvascular head and neck reconstruction, wisdom tooth and jaw surgery, salivary gland surgery and facial trauma.
In addition to surgical training, Luke completed a basic science PhD at University College London Cancer Institute studying the molecular biology of human papillomavirus and how this virus causes cancer with the aim of identifying potential novel therapeutic drug targets to treat this disease. For this research he was awarded the Paul Toller Research Prize, a national prize awarded by the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Luke is an honorary lecturer in The Division of Surgery and Interventional Science at University College London. He has authored several peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, as well as presented research at national and international conferences. Luke has a keen interest in teaching the next generation of surgeons, being clinical supervisor for registrars in oral and maxillofacial surgery and also as faculty for the London Free Flap Course at the Griffin Institute.
