Free training on suicide prevention for dental teams in Northern Ireland

18 April 2017

The Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency are now offering their SafeTALK course free for all members of the dental team.

Dentists and dental care professionals are encouraged to sign up for this three-hour training course which aims to equip participants with skills to be ‘suicide-alert helpers’.

Suicide-alert people are better prepared to help connect those who are having thoughts of suicide, with life-affirming help and preventative strategies.

The next course takes place on 27 April 2017 in Omagh, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm: book your free place online.

Mental Health First Aid course for healthcare professionals

A two-day Mental Health First Aid course is also soon to be offered to dentists in Northern Ireland, run by Aware NI on behalf of the Public Health Agency.

Aimed at healthcare professionals and those who are in contact with potentially vulnerable groups, the course will help participants recognise the symptoms of some of the common mental health problems.

The course will enable them to provide initial help to someone with a developing mental health problem, or in a mental health crisis, and guide a person towards the appropriate professional help.

Sixteen places have been secured on this course during the academic year 2017/18 for registered dentists. There will be places identified in every locality in Northern Ireland, but if you prefer, you can attend a course in any locality.

The courses are to be advertised later this year and information on how to book will be advertised in the NIMDTA online calendar

The course will be free and approved for CPD and practice allowance.

Tackling stress in dentistry

The BDA Northern Ireland’s ‘Probing stress in dentistry’ group is currently investigating further courses that could be of value to dentists and their teams.
