​Joy Harrild Award for Young Dentists

Our new award is open for nominations for young dentists who have made a significant contribution to the profession.


The Award is named in honour of Joy Harrild, an inspirational young dentist and BDA Young Dentist Committee member, whose life was tragically cut short by a car accident in 2016.

  1. Nominees must be BDA members
  2. Be within 10 years post-qualification
  3. Have made a significant contribution to the profession meeting at least two of the following criteria:
    • Have made a significant contribution to the profession

    • Have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to continued training and professional development

    • Have raised the profile of dentistry

    • Have made a contribution to the BDA

    • Have made a positive contribution to wider society through ‘good works’; working with a charity, their local community, or work abroad.

Nominations process

Nominations for this year’s round closed on 17 May 2017 and the winner will be announced in due course.

You can submit nominations for next year’s round at any time throughout this year – the closing date for 2018 nominations will be in the spring of 2018, the official closing date will be announced this Autumn.

BDA Honours and Awards

The winner will be invited (with a guest) to receive their award at the BDA’s Honours and Awards ceremony, which will take place during the British Dental Conference and Exhibition 2018 in Manchester.

Nominees will also be considered for our other BDA Honours and Awards.

Please note that current members of the BDA’s Young Dentists Committee members are not eligible for nomination.
