The new Scottish Public Dental Service (PDS)

The new contract of employment designed to modernise the terms and conditions of community and salaried dentists was introduced in Scotland in September 2013, following the successful outcome of the BDA ballot of our salaried members in August that year. Since then, the Scottish Salaried Dentists Committee (SSDC) with the support of BDA Scotland, have been pursuing the Scottish Government who have committed to provide a blue print for the new service in the form of a “Public Dental Service Overview and Guidance” document which is now scheduled to be issued in early Autumn.

Changes are already underway in some areas, as NHS Boards look to make savings by reducing the number of PDS clinics and redesign services.  Where possible NHS Boards are seeking to protect local access despite further rationalisation of the number of dental officer posts. In order to discuss the proposed changes in a number of areas of the service, BDA Scotland undertook a series of meetings with the following NHS Boards: Dumfries and Galloway; Tayside; Borders; Orkney Ayrshire and Arran and Highland. The purpose of these meetings was to gain a better understanding of the proposed changes and the likely impact on staff and patients.

The practical and operational issues of working within the General Dental Service (GDS) which have already been raised by members should be referred to SSDC representatives attending the forthcoming meeting of the Chief Dental Officers “PDS Implementation Group” which will meet for the first time on the 22nd July.  The BDA Representatives who have been nominated through SSDC are Christine Bolster, NHS Ayrshire and Arran and Colin Crawford, NHS Highland.
