Nigel Monaghan worked in hospital, general and community dental practice before commencing higher training in dental public health. Appointed a consultant in dental public health in 1999, he has led the Welsh dental epidemiology programme since then. He has been a trainer in dental public health for over 10 years and is currently the training programme director. Nigel was also Director of Public Health in 3 Welsh Health Boards between 2003 and 2008 and is a visiting professor in public health at the University of South Wales. From 2006-2010 he was a member of the Faculty of Public Health Policy Committee. From 2006 - 2008 he was vice president of the Association of Directors of Public Health. Currently he is co-opted onto WCCD and WGDPC, a member of the BDA Dental Public Health Committee and as cross-representative on the BMA Wales Public Health Committee.
Given that health problems of the 21st century are those which traditional approaches have failed to address, Nigel has a developing interest in the implications of complexity theory for health and healthcare.
