Dr David Howells qualified from the London Hospital Dental College in 1976. Following experience in hospital based oral and maxillo-facial surgery, he moved to Cardiff Dental School where he gained his Royal College Fellowship in Dental Surgery before embarking upon an orthodontic career. He undertook further, senior registrar training based in Birmingham before being appointed, in 1987, to a consultant post in Morriston Hospital, Swansea. He is pleased to have been clinical director of the Maxillofacial Unit there at a time of rapid growth and development of services. In the late 1990's David responded to massive unmet orthodontic treatment need in west Wales by establishing two specialist practices in Dyfed. He gradually transferred his time from hospital to specialist practice until, in 2006, he he sold his business; still working part time as a practice based specialist. He remains in mixed NHS and private practice, continuing to develop special interests in expanding the scope of aligner therapy as well as appliances for obstructive sleep apnoea and temporo-mandibular dysfunction. Outside work he pursues lifelong interests in nature conservation and steam locomotion. He is current chairman of Dyfed Powys Local Dental Committee, and keen that the Committee should maintain excellent relationships with both Hywel Dda and Powys Health Boards.
