BDA Scotland Trainee Ballot on Industrial Action

The ballot of BDA hospital trainee members in Scotland closed on Friday 5 May.

The results of the ballot were that:

  • 79% of members voted
  • 91% of members supported strike action.

The BDA therefore has met the thresholds required to undertake industrial action with members providing a clear mandate that they are prepared to fight for appropriate terms and conditions.

BDA Scotland Trainee pay dispute

Negotiations between the BMA Scotland and the Scottish Government have led to a pay offer of 6.5% uplift for this year and an increase from 4.5% to 7.5%, backdated for 2022/23 - an aggregate uplift of 14.5% over two years.

Both the BDA and the BMA will put the pay offer made by the Scottish Government to our relevant members in a consultative vote. BDA Scotland is putting this offer to you neutrally, meaning we are not taking a position on whether to accept or reject the offer.

The BMA negotiates on behalf of the BDA in relation to the junior doctors and dentists contract in Scotland.

The Scottish Government has also committed to a Junior Doctor Pay Bargaining Review Taskforce which will have a remit to develop a new pay bargaining system that seeks to prevent pay erosion and finally ensure pay properly recognises the contribution of junior doctors in Scotland.

The BDA's existing mandate for strike action, provided by the ballot undertaken by BDA Scotland earlier this year, remains in place for six months – ensuring all options remain open following the outcome of the vote.

FAQ's

What is industrial action?

Industrial action is any action that the BDA asks you to consider in response to a dispute with your employer; it is not limited to strike action and could include things such as an overtime ban or working to rule.

What are the key dates?

No date for industrial action in Scotland has been set yet.

I'm not a DCT or StR in Scotland?

This information is for DCT or StR in Scotland only who are taking industrial action. We will update colleagues in other branches of practice as and when it is appropriate.

I'm a Vocational Trainee, am I involved?

Vocational trainee dentists are employed on a different contract to hospital trainees so are not included in this round of action.

What is the BDA relationship with the BMA?

Trainee dentists (DCT and StR) are employed on the same contract as doctors. We will not ask BDA members to take action on days or in hospitals where the BMA is not taking action.
