Joint Dental Foundation Core Training (JDFCT) is a two-year training programme that combines Dental Foundation Training (DFT) and Dental Core Training (DCT) into a single integrated post. Designed for newly qualified dentists who want broader clinical experience early in their careers, JDFCT offers the opportunity to develop skills in both general dental practice and hospital or community dental services from the very start of training.
Unlike the traditional route, where dentists complete a year of DFT before applying separately for a DCT position, JDFCT brings both stages together in one structured programme. Foundation Dentists (FDs) work across multiple clinical environments throughout the two years, alternating between settings according to the specific scheme. Depending on the post, placements may rotate weekly, monthly, or annually, providing exposure to a wide range of patients, treatments, and healthcare teams.
The programme is designed to help dentists build confidence in primary care while gaining valuable experience in specialist and secondary care settings.
