Retirement and ill-health retirement

Advice on your options when you are seeking to retire from your NHS pension scheme.

Overview

Dentists who are members of the NHS Pension Scheme can retire at their scheme’s normal pension age or take early retirement with reduced benefits. The scheme also provides ill-health retirement for members who can no longer carry out their NHS dental duties due to permanent health problems.

Depending on the severity of the condition, dentists may receive either a pension based on their accrued service or an enhanced pension. These options are designed to support dentists who are planning retirement or are unable to continue working because of ill health.
