Accredited representatives in the workplace

The work of our network of excellent Accredited Representatives is essential to our success as a trade union.

The work of Accredited Representatives (ARs) is essential to our success as a trade union.

Any member employed within the CDS in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and PDS in Scotland is eligible to stand for election to the AR role at their workplace. Within larger services it is common for a second and sometimes a third AR to be elected.

The nature of the AR role depends on the size and structure of the dental service and on the time available to the individual. AR involvement can be anything from simply ensuring members receive information to representing their interests in negotiations with senior management. We value all levels of activity.

This advice describes:

  • The main aspects of the AR role
  • The training and ongoing support provided by the Employment Relations Team, and through the AR network
  • Participation in local ‘staff side’ activity
  • The right to reasonable (paid) time off to access training and perform the role; and
  • The importance of ARs in recruiting and retaining BDA members.
