Specific and voluntary consent by a patient to your proposed treatment is a legal requirement and involves more than simply getting a patient to sign a form.

Valid, informed consent ensures that the patient has enough information to make a decision, that they understand that information and can make a judgement based on that information.

It is your responsibility to discuss fully the proposed treatment with the patient. As the treating dentist you will have a thorough understanding of the procedure or treatment, how it is carried out and any risks attached to it – you must obtain the patient’s consent before proceeding.

For more information, see our advice sheet for members on consent.
