There are many ethical and legal guidelines for dentists to follow. Here is a brief overview, giving you a good place to start learning more about your ethical responsibilities as a dentist.

As a dentist, you must:

  • Read and comply with the GDC's standards, being sure to note where they use the words ‘must’ and ‘should’ to indicate areas where compliance is mandatory and areas where there is room for flexibility
  • Always act in your patients’ best interests
  • Comply with the GDC’s requirements for CPD
  • Work within your knowledge and competence; do not attempt treatments you have not been trained for, always refer a patient if necessary
  • Always obtain the patient’s valid informed consent to the treatment proposed
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information which you hold about your patients.
