Smoking causes about 120,000 premature deaths per year in the UK and is the largest single preventable cause of death. Around 13 million adults in the UK smoke and treatment of smoking-related diseases costs the NHS £1500 million per year. Tobacco consumption is detrimental to oral health in many ways, and is one of the major causes of oral cancer.
