Foundation training

Concern was expressed about the pressure on places for dental foundation training, and the process for allocation of places. According to a COPDEND press release in mid January, there were 1172 applications for places in 2013. 1153 eligible applicants were invited to interview, including 109 from EU dental schools and 17 from other countries.1138 of these attended for interview in the last week of November. 952 available places were allocated in the first round, with 24 allocated to February schemes and the remainder for August. 161 individuals were currently on the waiting list for the second round of place allocations.
The BDA provides advice to those on the reserve list, and intends to run a survey again this year about the process from final year students.  The Association also provided a series of lectures between September and November 2012 to help UK students prepare for the interviews and these were well received.

Member participation

The decline in young dentist involvement in several branches was reported on, and concern about the way in which demographic progression was affecting active member involvement locally. PEC members in attendance reported that engagement with younger members had been a particular focus in recent strategy development.

Workforce planning

Workforce planning was another concern, and questions raised about the possible establishment of a new dental academy in Leicester.

Consultation submissions

Although members of the council had commented on GDC consultation documents regarding direct access and CPD they had not been informed of the final version of the BDA’s submissions.  It was agreed that these would be circulated, and that in future council members should be sent BDA final submissions.
