CCHDS Members 2018 - 2020

In the BDA's 2017 elections members of the Central Committee for Hospital Dental Services were elected for a three year term. Below is a profile of some of the members.

Peter Dyer 
Peter graduated in dentistry from the Royal Dental Hospital in 1979 during which time he was the president of the British Dental Students' Association and in medicine from University College Hospital, London in 1988. He completed his training as a senior registrar at the Royal London Hospital and was appointed consultant in oral and maxillofacial surgery to the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust in 1998 with a special interest in trauma and orthognathics. He co-edited the Handbook of Immediate Care and has contributed chapters about dento-facial trauma in a number of textbooks.

Peter worked as the medical director for the Trust and is currently the responsible officer overseeing the appraisal and revalidation of the medical staff. He is married to Vicky a consultant in restorative dentistry and they
have two children.

Amerjit Singh
Amerjit Singh, is a Consultant Orthodontist at Southend and Basildon Hospitals appointed in 2002. He obtained a degree in Biochemistry with honours in 1988 (University College London) and then went on to qualify in Dentistry in 1992 (London Hospital Dental School), obtaining the Fellowship in Dental Surgery (Royal College of Surgeons of England) in 1996. He completed his Masters degree in Orthodontics at the Eastman Dental Institute, University of London in 1998 and his Membership in Orthodontics in 1999 (Royal College of Surgeons of England). He obtained the Fellowship in Orthodontics FDS.Orth (RCS Eng) in 2002.

His special clinical interests are the treatment of adults with underlying jaw deformities, the management of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea / snoring with Mandibular Advancement Splints and the training of specialist orthodontists. He also works in a specialist consultant private practice in Billericay in Essex. He has published research articles, presented papers and posters at a large number of regional and national meetings. He is actively involved in the training of dentists wishing to train on the 3 year postgraduate training programme linked into the Royal London Hospital, leading them to Specialist Accreditation with the GDC.

Out of work he enjoys travelling, reading and swimming.

Basheer Dawood
Basheer Dawood is a Consultant Orthodontist currently at Russells Hall Hospital in the West Midlands with over 24 years experience in orthodontics. Prior to his orthodontic career he had a wide range of experience in general dentistry in Asia and was a flying dentist in the Far East delivering basic dental care to rural populations deep in the jungle via government sponsored helicopter services. After this period Basheer decided to specialise in Orthodontics achieving his MOrth and MSc in Bristol and later completing his specialty FDS(Orth) training linked between Portsmouth, Isle of Wight and Bristol. 

Basheer has been committed to delivering high quality orthodontic care in all branches of the specialty and has special interests in orthognathic cases. Within the CCHDS, Basheer hopes to contribute to the various challenges the hospital service is facing specifically in orthodontics. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling to the Far Fast, reading science fiction, chatting to the global village on social media and as best as possible keeping to thrice weekly visits to the gym.

Nicky Stanford
​​Nicky Stanford works as a Consultant Orthodontist at the Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble District General Hospitals. He has been a member of the CCHDS as a Specialty Trainee from 2012-2014, acting as a cross-rep on the BMAs Junior Doctors' Committee providing input on behalf of BDA members on the negotiations for the 2016 Junior Doctors' contract. 

He became a consultant member of the CCHDS in 2017 and was elected by the committee onto the executive at the start of the recent triennium in 2018. He currently provides cross-representation on the GDPC and sit as the BDA's representative on the NHS England committee overseeing the pilot scheme for prior approval of Orthognathic surgery, Implant placement and TMJ replacement surgery.

Nicky strongly believes that the CCHDS should have an important role to play in representing hospital dentists at a national level and I am proud to represent my fellow consultants in my current position.

Robert Bunyan
Rob Bunyan qualified in Dundee in 1979. In 1996 he began Staff Grade Associate Specialist posts in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Lincoln, Bedford and Luton and Dunstable Hospitals. He has been appointed an honorary Consultant in Oral Surgery at Luton and Dunstable. His Specialty interests include the prevention of osteoradionecrosis in cancer patients, peri-radicular surgery, orthodontic related surgery, the use of implants in rehabilitation of head and neck cancer patient, sedation and teaching of Oral Surgery to trainee surgeons.

He is a Past President of The British Association of Oral Surgeons. He is a keen cyclist and runner and passionate about music.

Jinesh Shah
​Jinesh completed his undergraduate BDS degree from University College London Dental School. He then spent some time in general dental practice before deciding to specialise in Orthodontics. He completed his specialty registrar training at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital and Queens Medical Hospital and his post CCST training at Liverpool University Dental Hospital and Countess of Chester Hospital. He is now working as a Consultant Orthodontist at the Royal Stoke University Hospital for the past 7 years. Before specialising in Orthodontics, Jinesh has had a wide range of experience working in general practice as well as hospital specialties which has been very valuable in his present post which involves treating complex multidisciplinary cases. He has joined BDA CCHDS committee as there are several areas in the hospital consultant service under review and it is important to have strong representation during negotiations from the BDA to ensure that the new contracts and policies are beneficial to the consultants and junior doctors who work hard providing the best care to patients in the NHS.

In his spare time, Jinesh loves to travel and explore different places and cultures in the world. He also likes outdoor activities trekking and mountain climbing.

Joanna Dancer
​Dr Joanna Dancer qualified in Dentistry with a BChD at Leeds Dental School in 1984, and after a series of junior hospital posts she completed her Orthodontic Specialist Training at Leeds Dental Institute in 1993. She was appointed as Consultant in Orthodontics in Carlisle Hospitals NHS Trust in 1996.  Since 2003 Joanna has been a part-time Consultant in Orthodontics at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and became Chair of Lancashire Orthodontic Clinical Network when it was formed in 2013. In the past Joanna has been Chair and Secretary of the BOS Training Grades Group and a member of the BOS Council, as well as Editor of the BOS News from 1997-2000. She became Deputy Director of the BOS Clinical Practice Directorate in 2017 with a particular interest in furthering the BOS's work in supporting the development of Orthodontic MCNs nationally.

Peter Brotherton
​Pete Brotherton has had an interest in the BDA and Oral surgery since commencing his secondary care post over 20 yrs ago.In addition to this he is currently the Chair and past President for the BDA's Hospital Group (which serve as the educational committee for Hospital dentistry with the BDA). He has organised several national study days.

He was involved with the development of the Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine Commissioning guide with NHS England and have sat on the SAC for Oral Surgery. He is also involved with the British Association of Oral Surgeons. In his day job he is a Specialist in Oral Surgery and Associate Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. He is the Training Programme Director for Dental Core Trainees and act as the SAS tutor for his trust.

Julia Winterburn
​Julia Winterburn is a SAS in Oral Surgery at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon ever since. Julia graduated from Sheffield in 2010. She spent 2 months volunteering for Facing Africa in Ethiopia treating and looking after patients undergoing facial reconstructions following NOMA. She spent 2 years in Australia working in Oral Surgery at Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne (including postgrad teaching). Also worked part time in private practice and public emergency clinics. She holds a PgCert in Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals (University of Bristol 2017).

In her spare time is likes to keep active, walking her dog, cycling, running, Thai boxing, Pilates. She lovea wildlife, birds and photography.
​Sami Stagnell
​​Sami Stagnell is a Specialist in Oral Surgery and currently runs oral surgery services across the South Coast. He has worked throughout primary and secondary care as well as an Honorary Clinical Teacher and one of the first Fellows in Clinical Leadership with HEE. He is an active member of many societies, and is a returning YDC member, having served as Vice-Chair during the 2015-17 term of office. He is passionate about representing the interests of young dentists, to ensure the profession develop and improves.

In his spare time, he enjoys time with his young family, cycling, Crossfit and skiing.

​Nadia Ahmed
​Nadia Ahmed qualified from Sheffield Dental School in 2007. Following this, she gained extensive experience in secondary care, in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Radiology, Paedodontics and Oral Medicine. She completed a Postgrad Certificate in Health Research from the University of Leeds in 2011. She carried out her Specialist training in Orthodontics in Leeds and gained her MSc in 2015 and MOrth from RCS London in 2016. She carried out research into the outcomes of tooth autotransplantation as part of her MSc. She currently works in Specialist practice treating mainly NHS patients and as an Associate Specialist in Orthodontics in Kettering hospital where sees more complex cases and is involved with the care of Orthognathic patients. 

Alongside her clinical work, she has recently been appointed an MJDF examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons. Her outside interests include cake decorating, oil painting, hill walking and Bollywood dance.

Kathryn Edwards
​Kathryn Edwards gained her BDS from Newcastle University in 2009 and have subsequently developed her skills working in primary care, secondary care and the community dental service in the UK. During a year abroad living in Australia she worked as a dentist for Queensland Health. She is currently a second year Orthodontic Registrar at Newcastle University undertaking an MSc in Orthodontics. She is the BDA Northern Counties assistant secretary, a member of the British Orthodontic Society and has previously been the Northern Counties Young Dentists Social Secretary. 

In her free time, she enjoys spending time travelling, exploring the countryside and spending time with her family.

Anurag Srinivas
​Anurag Srinivas has been elected for the first time to CCHDS committee. He is currently a DCT 1 working in South Wales and is looking to further his career in the Hospital Dental Services. With a keen interest in teaching and education he is looking forward to representing dental trainees on this committee.


His outside interests mostly involve keeping active- tennis, squash and running. He also enjoys visiting his local cinema. 

Ursula J 120 px.jpgUrsala Jogezai

​Ursala Jogezai is a DCT 3 currently in restorative dentistry at the Edinburgh Dental Institute. This is the specialty I wish to pursue long term as I find it both very challenging and rewarding. I particularly enjoy rehabilitation of oncology patients as well as periodontics especially surgical periodontics. She served as vice chair on the young dentist committee between 2015-2017 and found the experience very rewarding. Being a hospital dentist, she wishes to be pro-active in representing her group. As a very small select cohort it is important that there is a platform where voices can be heard. Apart from dentistry. Ursala loves to travel and read. She has undertaken a foundation certificate in yoga and practices both yoga and meditation on a daily basis to keep herself healthy physically as well as mentally and emotionally.

Priya Bahal
​Priya is the current Periodontal Academic Clinical Fellow at Guy's Hospital, London. She graduated from the University of Bristol and since then has undertaken a number of roles. Her VT was completed in the picturesque Teignmouth, South Devon and she then completed a DF2 rold in Worcester which was split between Max Fax role and the community dental services. Priya then undertook a Restorative Career Development Post at King's Dental Institute in London before moving back to Bristol where she worked as a Restorative Speciality Dentist. She then joined the Clinical Trials team at Bristol Dental School where she ran a clinical trial for her research MSc and throughout all this time Priya has maintained her interest through working in NHS and private practice.


Currently she is undertaking the MClinDent in Periodontology with King's College, London and her current research will form the basis of her future PhD application. In her spare time she enjoys cycling, sewing and baking lovely sweet treats!

Adam Jones
​Adam graduated from Leeds Dental Institute in 2010 and undertook core training positions in Oral Surgery in the North West before a period working overseas in General Practice. He has recently returned to Leeds where he works as a dental core trainee. With interests in academic oral surgery and dental education both in the UK and developing world, he has recently returned from a trip to Tanzania working with dental development charity Bridge2Aid. Through the CCHDS he hopes to represent the interests of young Oral Surgeons in both training and SAS roles.


Outside of dentistry he enjoys competing in multisport and trail running events.

Laura Cross
​Laura Cross is a Consultant and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in Restorative Dentistry. She has enjoyed being involved in the Scottish Committee for Hospital Dental Services and is looking forward to coming along to CCHDS to gain experience of working with the BDA at a UK level. She hopes that her membership of the BMA's Local Negotiating Committee in Glasgow and the BMA Scottish Consultants' Committee will be of value to CCHDS. She hopes that by raising awareness of the BDA's work amongst my colleagues locally and across Scotland more people might be motivated to become more involved in the BDA in the future. 

Outside of work she enjoys running, hill-walking, cooking and travelling abroad.
Manar Elkhazinder
​Manar Elkhazindar is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry/ NHS Highland providing a range of specialist restorative services to Scottish Highland and Western Isles. Her work in rural Scotland had highlighted the need for more equitable distribution of health care and the value of managed clinical networks MCNs. As previous chair of Scottish Committee for Hospital Dental Services she enjoyed working with colleagues debating myriad of challenges facing hospital dentistry, e.g., shortage of staff, limited funding and the implementation of the Oral Health Plan in Scotland. She feels there is still more work to do, such as regulation for hospital managers and refuting waiting time as the only measure of quality in healthcare.

​Gerry McKenna
​Gerry McKenna is a Senior Lecturer / Consultant in Restorative Dentistry working in Queen’s University Belfast (QUB). He completed his undergraduate dental degree at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne before undertaking junior hospital positions in Edinburgh and Dundee. He was awarded his PhD in 2012 from University College Cork and completed higher specialist training in Restorative Dentistry in 2014. He is an active clinical researcher and is a Principal Investigator within the Centre for Public Health in QUB. His research is focused on improving oral health for older patients including nutritional and quality of life outcomes. He is the incoming vice-president of the Geriatric Oral Research Group (GORG) at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and is past president of the European College of Gerodontology (ECG). 

Gerry has two young children who occupy much of his free time but occasionally he does enjoy a round of golf. He is a long suffering follower of Liverpool Football Club.
