Decontamination in the practice - are your procedures keeping the practice safe?

Session synopsis

This session aims to provoke thought and to help you assess and improve your decontamination procedures to ensure they are as effective as they could be. Paul will discuss the various aspects of decontamination governance and evidence that practices should ideally be collating in order to prepare for their next CQC inspection. It will also review the latest auditing tool available on the IPS website; Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for decontamination systems, including a brief look at spending on decontamination (do you really know what you are spending on decontamination in the practice?); and new developments within the field of medical device decontamination.

Lecture filmed at the British Dental Conference and Exhibition 2015.

Learning objectives

  • Be able to explain the benefits of periodic audit
  • The latest new technologies within instrument decontamination
  • Recognise differing instrument 'track and trace' options
  • The benefits of having a dedicated 'decontamination technician'.

1 hour of verifiable CORE CPD

A CPD certificate (in the name of the purchaser) will be available to download once viewing of this online lecture has been completed.

About the speaker

Paul Jenkins, Trust Decontamination Manager for North Bristol NHS Trust

Paul initially trained as a mechanical, electrical and HTM test engineer for thermal/chemical washer disinfectors and healthcare/pharmaceutical sterilizers.

In 2000 Paul joined Eastwood Park Training Centre and subsequently became 'Decontamination' Department Manager in 2004. As such Paul was responsible for the delivery of many courses pertaining to healthcare decontamination practice.

Following his time at Eastwood Park Paul went on to join the NHS in 2007 and is now the Trust Decontamination Manager for North Bristol NHS Trust; as such he is responsible for the management of two 24 hour Sterile Service Departments which reprocess reusable medical devices for the Trusts twenty six operating theatres. He also advises the Trust on decontamination issues. Paul has recently been involved in the new Southmead PFI hospital which opened its doors in May of last year, and over the next 12 months he will be working on the final phase of the PFI build which will deliver a state of the art 'Decontamination Facility' for the hospital. The opening of this facility is scheduled for March 2016.

In his spare time Paul continues to train and present on decontamination issues to personnel involved in re-usable medical device decontamination. For the past six years Paul has also been presenting on HTM01-05 for the British Dental Association.
