An IRMER update in dental radiography and radiation protection

Our popular day-long 'IRMER update' lecture programme delivered in a series of five easy to access on-demand lecture sessions that can be viewed at a time convenient to you between Saturday 1 July 2023 until midnight on Monday 31 July 2023.

Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 (IRMER) impose significant requirements for patient protection. This course will bring you up to date with the legislation concerning dental radiography and ensure you are aware of statutory responsibilities. Covering the principles of justification, optimisation and limitation this course satisfies both the IRMER regulations and core CPD requirements as recommended by the GDC.

Aim

To ensure you are complying with obligations under current legislation and enhance awareness of good working practice.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the principles of radiation physics
  • Be aware of the risks of ionising radiation
  • Understand the radiation doses in dental radiography and the factors affecting them
  • Recognise the principles of radiation protection
  • Be up to date on the statutory requirements, selection criteria and quality assurance
  • Understand the various imaging modalities available including digital imaging and 3D (CBCT)
  • Understand the principles of radiographic interpretation and problems which may occur.
  • This 'update' course is suitable for all dentists and DCPs who have already obtained their dental radiography certificate.

Learning content

A lecture-based online course with the opportunity to ask questions. A series of five sessions delivered by one speaker who incorporated the principles of justification, optimisation and limitation in his talks. 

Course format

The course will take place online, delivered through a series of five on-demand lecture sessions to be viewed at a time that is convenient to you, between Saturday 1 July 2023 and Monday 31 July 2023.

Lecture 1: An update on the regulations IRR and IR(ME)R 2017 (60 mins)

  • Changes in the new legislation
  • The important points for dentists
Lecture 2: Physics and dose limitation (50 mins)

  • Nature of ionising radiation
  • Interaction with tissues
  • Risks associated with radiation
  • Dosimetry and dose limit
Lecture 3: Selection criteria and quality assurance (60 mins)

Lecture 4: Interpretation and CBCT (80 mins)

  • Interpretation principles and pit falls
  • The benefits and use of CBCT
Lecture 5: Q&A session of previously asked questions (40 mins)

Post lecture CPD quiz (10 mins)

The quizzes will automatically launch at the end of each session

Consultant in Maxillofacial Radiology, Liverpool University Dental Hospital and Royal Liverpool University Hospital

Paul is Consultant in Maxillofacial Radiology at Liverpool Dental Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, and is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Liverpool. He has many years of experience in lecturing on different aspects of Dental Radiology and is the author of several publications in this area.

CPD

Development outcome - C and D5 hours CPD

In order to qualify for a CPD certificate attendees must view in full all five lecture sessions by Monday 31 July 2023 (as detailed above) and complete the engagement surveys after the sessions to indicate a satisfactory level of understanding has been achieved.

CPD certificates will be issued the week of Monday 7 August 2023  once attendance has been validated and survey responses reviewed.

Cancellation

All cancellations must be received in writing by email to events@bda.org. Cancellations received 7 days or more prior to a virtual event will be entitled to a 100% refund. For cancellations received after this time, no refund will be given. Failure to view sessions will constitute as a late cancellation and no refund will be given.

Please note: It is not possible to book/attend just one session of this course (and the completion date of midnight on Tuesday 31 January 2023 cannot be extended).

Certificates will not be issued for partial attendance and no refunds will be given for failure to view.
