Foundations for the future: periodontal issues
affecting children and young
Periodontal diseases are not limited to adults. On the contrary, periodontal diseases are present among children and adolescents with varying prevalence, severity and extent, and can lead to a varied prognosis in these age groups. For an early diagnosis and treatment of periodontal conditions in young patients, it is essential for the dental practitioner to be able to identify and diagnose periodontal diseases correctly at the earliest opportunity and have a solid understanding of the aetiology and risk factors. Aspects of orthodontic treatment affecting periodontal health and the risk management of periodontal health during orthodontic treatment will also be discussed.
