    The challenges of rehabilitating patients requiring facial prostheses

    Aim

    To provide an understanding and appreciation of the challenges of rehabilitating patients with facial prostheses as a result of cancer and congenital facial differences.

    Learning objectives

    • Explore traditional and future methods of prosthetic facial rehabilitation.
    • Understand the surgical and prosthetists perspective on rehabilitation
    • Consider the selection of methods of retaining a prosthesis to the face exploring advantages and disadvantages of each
    • Examine the use and consideration of 3D pre surgical planning, cutting guides and templates, implant position in reconstruction to obtain the best patient outcomes
    • Explore digital methods for the future of facial prosthetics.

    Explore the work of Maurice Porter, a dentist and amateur clarinettist who dedicated his professional life to help woodwind and brass players maintain the best possible embouchure. 


    We also have the BDA Presidential Meeting taking place at 13:00, immediately after lunch. 

    The BDA Presidential Meeting will see Liz Kay MBE conclude her terms as a BDA President and will deliver her valedictory address. 
    John Milne MBE will then be installed as the new BDA President for 2023-2024.

    About the speaker

    ​Trevor Coward

    Professor and Consultant in Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Rehabilitation and member of the Centre for Oral, Clinical and Translational Sciences group at Kings College London.

    Trevor has over 35 years of experience with rehabilitating patients with facial/body prostheses. He has a national and international reputation as a Maxillofacial Prosthetist, a dental educator and an innovative researcher.

    In teaching he developed the first MSc programme in Maxillofacial and Craniofacial Technology, the first of its kind in the world. The development of the distance learning MSc in prosthetic rehabilitation in 2009 has permitted students from all around the world to gain experience and knowledge in new technologies whilst being able to continue working within their clinical practice. These courses have contributed to KCL Dental Institute being recognised as a national/international training centre for Maxillofacial Prosthetists and Technologists and recognised as a centre of excellence in this specialty.

    In 2015 KCL recognized the unit as the Academic Centre of Reconstructive Science where the academic and NHS units of Maxillofacial Rehabilitation became one centre led by Trevor as the academic and consultant lead. His research contribution includes peer reviewed publications, grants, research contracts and academic collaborations within KCL, other craniofacial centres within the UK, and with overseas partners (i.e. University of Alberta, CA – Research fellow; University of Illinois, USA; Hong Kong University- Hon Clinical Professor; Oklahoma State University, USA; Pune, India; Brescia, Rome, Italy).
