​Antimicrobial drug resistance is a growing global problem and the challenge is to find alternatives to antibiotics.

Learning objectives

​To understand the challenges of antimicrobial resistance in head and neck infection and get an insight into alternative strategies to antibiotics.

Learning content

​This will be a didactic teaching session with an explanation of the evolution of antimicrobial therapies. The results of peer reviewed publications will be critically reviewed and give practical details on how these therapies might be applied.

Colin Hopper


Honorary Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, University College London Hospitals. Associate Clinical Professor Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, UCL Eastman, London. Colin was appointed Senior Lecturer Consultant at The Eastman and UCH in 1991. Since then he has been variously involved in the management of facial deformity, trauma and facial pain. Most recently his main research focus has been on early diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer and precancer. In addition, he has been teaching and supervising PhDs and Masters postgraduates at the Eastman. Colin studied medicine and dentistry at Guys before higher surgical training at UCH, the Eastman Great Ormond Street and Queen Victoria East Grinstead. Colin has contributed chapters to many books on PDT and optical diagnostics and published over 200 peer‐reviewed papers. He is an executive of the International Photodynamic Association and founding president of the Head and Neck Optical Diagnostic Society. He has ongoing projects in India and Bolivia on the treatment of head and neck cancer.
