  • To discuss the diagnosis and treatment of dental pain with particular emphasis on acute pain relating to endodontics
  • To highlight and emphasise areas of endodontics which are most relevant to general practitioners.
Learning objectives
  • To have a clear understating of the importance of diagnosis
  • To understand the role of anaesthetics and their limitations
  • Be able to appropriately medicate a patient, pre and post treatment
  • To recognise and cope with acute dental emergencies.
Learning content

This will be an informal lecture about pain and endodontics. This will start with diagnosis and go through steps to deal with pain both before and during treatment and the avoidance of post-operative pain.

Pre-medication, anaesthesia, operative problems, hot pulps and flare-ups will all be discussed with practical advice gained from 25 years of endodontic experience of dealing with anxious and occasionally angry patients all in pain.

Dr Michael Sultan

Michael Sultan studied dentistry at the University of Bristol and worked in a mixed practice for five years in North London.

He gained his MSc in Endodontics at Guys Hospital in1993 under Professor Tom Pitt Ford. He worked as an in-house specialist in various practices before setting up his private referral practice in central London which later became EndoCare.

Michael has lectured nationally and internationally and at the Eastman and Guy’s hospitals. He regularly contributes to various dental journals.
