The aim of this presentation is to discuss the 2017 classification system in relation to health, gingivitis and periodontitis.

Learning objectives
  • Understand the changes to classifying periodontitis

  • Understand the BSP’s recommendation for implementation of the system in general dental practice

  • Recognise the differences between periodontal screening and diagnosis in dental practice.

Learning content

Within this presentation, there will be a discussion on how the new periodontal classification works and some practical cases to help delegates put the theory into practice.

Ian Burn

Senior Clinical Teacher, University of Central Lancashire

Ian graduated in 1977, and awarded prizes in oral surgery and orthodontics. Ian practised as a general dental practitioner for over 30 years with a wide range of clinical experience, gained mainly within a primary care NHS setting, including; advanced restoration, oral surgery, orthodontics, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia.

He has broad teaching experience at an undergraduate level, as a clinical lecturer at Manchester Dental School, and at postgraduate level, as postgraduate dental tutor for Wigan and Bolton. Ian also gained considerable experience in clinical audit and is a past chair of the regional Local Assessment Panel, as well as a past chair of Bolton LDC during the 2006 NHS UDA contract negotiations.

In 2008, Ian was appointed as a full time senior clinical teacher at UCLan, leading in undergraduate Clinical Periodontology Teaching.
