Aims / objectives

Lecture 1: Managing caries in older adults

  • To discuss the challenges of managing chronic dental diseases in older adults
  • To discuss preventative interventions for older adults
  • To discuss contemporary, minimally invasive caries management for older adults.

Lecture 2: Tooth replacement for older adults

  • To discuss the emerging partially dentate older population
  • To consider treatment options for replacing missing teeth in older adults
  • To discuss the applications of the Shortened Dental Arch in older adults.
Learning contentTwo lectures outlining the practical preventive and restorative clinical issues affecting the older population and how to overcome them in general dental practice, with clinical tips alongside a scientific evidence base.

Gerry McKenna is a Senior Lecturer / Consultant in Restorative Dentistry working in Queen's University Belfast. He is a specialist in Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry and a Principal Investigator within the Centre for Public Health in Queen's University Belfast. Gerry qualified from Newcastle University in 2004 before completing junior hospital posts in Edinburgh and Dundee. He completed his PhD and higher specialist training in University College Cork and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.  Gerry is an active clinical researcher with an interest in Gerodontology. He is the former president of the European College of Gerodontology and the current vice-president of the Geriatric Oral Research Group in IADR. He has published widely in the field of Gerodontology and won a number of prizes for his research work including the IADR Senior Hatton Award in 2012 and the ECG GABA Research Award in 2013.  His current research programme is supported by competitive grants from NIHR, Dunhill Medical Trust, Atlantic Philanthropies and the European and Social Research Council.
